Variations in Cerebral Arterial Circle of Willis in Patients With Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Computed Tomography Angiographic Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: To identify the anatomical variations in cerebral arterial circle of Willis in patients with hemorrhagic stroke. Methods: Computerized tomographic (CT) angiograms of fifty four non-randomly selected patients who presented with hemorrhagic stroke were studied for the anatomical variations in the circle of Willis regarding its completeness, pattern and symmetry. The individual cerebral vessels were also noted for the presence, origin, caliber and symmetry. The variations of the circle as whole and segmental variations were studied. Results: In the study, seventeen (31.4%) of fifty four (100%) cerebral arterial circles were complete. Eleven (20.3%) had typical configuration, nine (16.6%) had symmetrical and forty seven subjects (87%) had different types of variations in their component vessels. Variations are most common in posterior communicating artery followed by anterior communicating. Eleven (20.3%) circles were found with aneurysm. Conclusions: Different types of variations in the formation of circle of Willis as a whole and in its component vessels are common in patients of hemorrhagic stroke.

Purpose: The circle of willis is responsible for blood supply of brain, which may suffer from anatomical variations. These disturbances can lead to aneurysm or even arterial rupture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anatomical structure of the cerebral arteries forming the circle of willis in adult cadavers. Also, cerebral versus non- cerebral versus non-cerebral arterial walls wer...

ABSTRACT Anatomical variations have great importance among various medical disciplins. The significance of these variations differ from some points of view including system, site and degree of variation. Vascular system is a common site of variations. The importance of this system in supplying the organs, specially the brain has made it to be in focus for its variations. The main sourc...

Background & Aims: The relationship between variations of Willis circle and some cerebrovascular diseases has been shown in previous studies. A few studies have been conducted in Iran on these variations. Methods: This study was performed on 100 recently deceased Iranians due to car accidents who had been referred to Kerman Forensic Medicine Center for autopsy. The length and diameter of cerebr...

Variations in the cerebral arterial circle (CAC) correlate with incidence of some cerebrovascular diseases and must be considered during surgical operations (1, 2). It also seems that different distribution of variations of the CAC is related to the race. This issue may partially explain the different incidences of some of the cerebrovascular diseases in different ethnic or racial groups (3-5)....
